The Reason this Democratic Party Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the publication of its internal post-election analysis on the last presidential race is stunning but not surprising. Averse to unpleasant candor, the DNC behaves closer to a communications shop than an electoral entity committed to building grassroots capacities for winning elections.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Reluctant to break with the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has continued within the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Releasing such a report would have indicated whether party leaders are interested to foster open debate about the errors that paved the way for Donald Trump to return to the White House. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to be learned following the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," an explanation which was presented for withholding the document.

Major Failures an Analysis Would Have Examined

An autopsy report of substance would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. This encompasses:

  • Voter Alienation: The loss of a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election became a critical factor during the tight 2024 election.
  • A Decision to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence of the incumbent to run again, and a last-minute withdrawal, is viewed as robbing Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort is criticized for accommodating corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to challenge the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Gaza Factor: The failure to reconsider an approach concerning the situation in Gaza reportedly led to losing significant blocs, notably with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Youth Allegiance: Extensive evidence shows a huge drop-off in support for the party from the youth electorate.

A Pattern Shunning Scrutiny

Choosing secrecy aligns with a recurring tendency of sidestepping difficult realities. It recalls a situation where the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's determination to running for re-election right up until a disastrous televised debate forced an exit.

At the same time, a significant majority of the electorate were consistently telling researchers that they opposed that candidate to run again.

Financial Concerns

An honest analysis might also examine questions about where money went, such as what sums were directed to high-priced advisors as well as ad buyers during an electoral effort that managed to spend a colossal amount during the general election.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the blockage regarding the analysis points to an allegiance toward party leaders who engineered a disastrous presidential campaign. The message to ordinary supporters – which includes countless dedicated activists – is that they do not have a right to know the lessons the insiders claim to have learned based on hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

A party unwilling to honestly assess its mistakes finds it difficult to escape the rut that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
