In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
