Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
